As a college student studying in Spain in the mid 1970's, I found that my surname
created some interesting pronunciation challenges for the natives. The most
challenged of all the people who mispronounced my name was a teller at the Banco
Central de Madrid.  After handing over my passbook to him, I sat down in the waiting
area while he processed my withdrawal.

The transaction seemed to take a while and I heard them call out several other
names of people who had come in after me. I heard them call for a "Maria" several
times, but it wasn't me. Finally I looked over at the window and saw my teller waving
to me, looking a bit annoyed. I stared back at him for a moment, and then he
repeated the name he'd been calling out. Maria See-oh-ban Hooday. That was his
best attempt at getting his tongue around Maria Siobhan Judge.

One of my friends, to this day, still calls me Hoodgay
