My grandmother, Ella Nichols, was only 2 years old when her family left Louisville and moved to Fitchburg MA, but that still gives us some Kentucky ancestry
My hotel room had an AA book in the drawer instead of the Gideon Bible
But they do keep underage people out of the beer cave
They don't keep us older folks out of the local distilleries though. Here I am with my college friend Ann Marie at Casey Jones Distillery, with AC Jones, grandson of Casey Jones himself.
During Prohibition, Al Capone got moonshine from many different places, but his favorite came from Golden Pond, Kentucky and it was made by Casey Jones, Golden Pond’s master stillmaker. The stills he designed were unique and meticulously crafted. This was one of his stills that's been converted into the top of the bar.
I have myself a taste of hooch, right from the still. Potent? Oh, about 120 proof apparently.
Jug. Number 8 is almost full and will be replaced by Jug #9. Everything here is done by hand, quite impressive.
