The Post Season Poet

Between 2012 and 2022 I was inspired to jot down a few thoughts while watching the Super Bowl:

Casey Inevitably Comes to Mind

Feb 6, 2012

Oh somewhere 'cross the New York line the sun is shining bright,

And somewhere fans are jubilant, and have been through the night;

And somewhere cheers and hurrahs echo up and down the hall,

But there was no joy in Beantown after Brady threw that ball ...

... and no one caught it.

 Casey, but with a Much Better Ending

Feb 5, 2017

 "Oh somewhere down in Houston town is a guy known as Goodell;

Who tried to make the Patriot’s life—and Tom’s—a living hell;

But karma’s sweet, and victory’s sweet, so Roger: take a dive!

Cuz Tom and his mighty teammates have won their number FIVE!!!!"

 Brady and the Belle

Jan 21, 2018

 Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul;

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all

(Emily Dickinson a/k/a The Belle of Amherst, 1861)

Hope is the thing called Brady, who's full of heart and soul;

And sings the tune of victory,

And never stops until he's taken us to another Super Bowl!

(Maria Judge a/k/a The Post Season Poet 2017)

 What is the Word I’m Looking For?

Feb 4, 2018

 The Post Season Poet had to ponder a bit to come up with ‘les mots justes’ to describe tonight's game.

Turns out only two mots were needed: Donde Defense?

 Channeling Mary Oliver as I watch the Patriots Win the Super Bowl

Feb 3, 2019

He’s had to be so very good,

Better than all the rest;

He’s shown us time and time again

Just why he is the best.

He’s passed that pigskin to his mates

A hundred times and more;

Just one of many reasons he’s

The stuff of football lore.

Yes there were times when we despaired,

Oh we, of little faith;

Each time another team scored,

Doubting fans would get irate.

And the rest of the USA, it seems,

Thinks our boys don’t play it straight;

We know the balls never did deflate,

But haters still gonna hate.

It’s true the GOAT is 41,

Some say he’s past his prime;

He’s filled one hand with rings,

Will he get his sixth this time?

We loyal fans support this team,

Because they always try;

And maybe this time, like before,

We’ll see before our eyes:

How Tom Brady rose

Upon his toes,

And launched that football high;

Then we dropped to our knees,

As it soared through the breeze,

And we watched it fall from the sky;

Into the hands of Gronk, or Rex

A McCourty or a Brown;

Who feinted and passed and slipped through the Rams,

To score for the hometown.

And so the wild Brady, and team,

Have gone down south again;

To put their bodies on the line,

A trophy to regain.

Soon the scribes and all the sportsmen,

Who recount what is happening;

Will tell how the Pats once more will join,

The family of Super Bowl champions.

Further Musings while Watching the Victory Parade Pass Below my Office Window

Feb 5, 2019

The first was good,

The second better,

The third one followed to the letter;

The fourth came along in predictable fashion.

The fifth was won despite all the trashin’.

The sixth win is the best, it seems,

Cuz they still said no way could we do it;

But the trophy that traveled down Boylston today,

Proved the Patriots always see to it.

 Gone But Not Forgotten

Feb 7, 2021

 He no longer plays for the hometown team,

But he’s still our hometown lad;

And though he’s now a Buccaneer

His record is ironclad.

Twas Boston where he made his name,

To Boston he brought six rings;

And if he gets one more today,

We’ll cheer that seventh bling

Post Season Poetry Resumes, in 5 parts

Feb 7, 2022

Before the game:

12 may be the loveliest number,

For the Bengals this Sunday eve;

That’s how many seconds it took to score,

And the second half lead they achieve

25 has been a good number too,

Chris Evans he scored that, Amen!

Number 5 Tee Higgins he scored 2 TDs

2 times 5 equals 10.

During the game

Young Joe who checks in at number 9

Follows Cool and Broadway at QB;

Wait a sec, who the hell just hit him?

Well he’s still in the game, ya see.

Later in the game

We’re down to the last 9 minutes,

WTF! Get Roger Goodell off my TV!

And now there’s less than 4 on the clock

Time for the Bengals big D

Later in the game

So many flags, though none red, white and blue,

But the guys in blue and white just scored big;

But I never give up, there’s a minute plus left,

The Bengals could still dance a jig

Post game

No jigs for the Bengals, still a helluva game,

Through my rhyming was not in full gear;

It’s only the Pats that bring out my best game,

So let’s just wait until next year!
